Google Ads Quality Score: How to Improve It and Cut Your Ad Costs

Quality Score determines how much you pay per click and where your ads appear. Improving it can cut your CPCs by 30-50%. Here's how.

    # Google Ads Quality Score: How to Improve It and Cut Your Ad Costs

Quality Score is Google's 1-10 rating of how relevant and useful your ads are to searchers. A low Quality Score means you pay more per click and show less often. A high Quality Score means lower costs and better ad positions — sometimes at the same time.

Google calculates Ad Rank as: Bid × Quality Score × Expected Impact of Extensions.

A Quality Score of 8 at $1 bid beats a Quality Score of 4 at $2 bid in Ad Rank. In practice:

  1. Quality Score 7-10: You pay 30-50% less than the benchmark CPC
  2. Quality Score 5-6: You pay the benchmark CPC
  3. Quality Score 1-4: You pay 30-400% more than benchmark
  4. For a business spending $3,000/month on Google Ads, improving average QS from 5 to 8 can save $1,000-1,500/month while maintaining the same traffic volume.

The Three Components of Quality Score

    Google bases QS on:

    1. Expected Click-Through Rate (eCTR)

Google predicts whether your ad will be clicked based on its relevance to the search query. Ads that match the searcher's exact query closely have higher eCTR.

    2. Ad Relevance

How closely your ad copy matches the user's search intent. An ad for "Nike Running Shoes" shown for the query "trail running shoes" has lower relevance than an ad specifically mentioning trail running.

    3. Landing Page Experience

How relevant, useful, and fast your landing page is. Google evaluates: does the landing page deliver on what the ad promises? Is the page easy to navigate on mobile? Does it load quickly?

    How to Improve Expected CTR

Use the search term in your headline: If someone searches "web design services Denver," your headline should include those exact words. Dynamic Keyword Insertion (DKI) automates this at scale.

Test multiple ad variations: Run 3-5 ad variations per ad group. After 100+ impressions per ad, pause the lowest CTR performers. Google Ads will naturally favor higher-CTR ads.

Use all available headline and description slots: More copy = more opportunity to be relevant. Fill all 15 headline and 4 description slots in Responsive Search Ads.

Write benefit-focused copy: "Get Your Free Quote Today" outperforms "Contact Us." "Same-Day Installation Available" outperforms "We Offer Installation." Specificity beats generality.

    How to Improve Ad Relevance

Tightly themed ad groups: Each ad group should contain 10-20 closely related keywords. If you're advertising web design and SEO services, they should be separate ad groups — ideally separate campaigns.

Match ad copy to keywords: If your ad group targets "emergency plumber," your headline should say "Emergency Plumber Available Now." The keyword must appear naturally in the ad.

Negative keywords: Remove irrelevant searches showing your ads. An ad for "premium leather wallets" shown for "cheap wallets" has low relevance. Add "cheap," "free," "DIY" as negatives.

How to Improve Landing Page Experience

One ad group = one landing page: Don't send all traffic to your homepage. Create specific landing pages for each ad group's topic.

Align the landing page headline with the ad headline: If your ad says "Custom Web Design — From $1,490," your landing page headline should immediately confirm this. Any mismatch increases bounce rate and tanks LP experience.

Improve page speed: LP experience is directly affected by load time. A page that takes 5+ seconds to load will have a "Below Average" LP experience regardless of content quality.

Include the search terms on the page: If you're advertising for "SEO services," your landing page should prominently feature those words. This seems obvious but is often neglected.

Clear, single CTA: Landing pages with one focus (get a quote, book a call, buy now) convert better and have better QS than pages with 10 different options.

    Checking Your Quality Scores

In Google Ads: Campaigns > Ad Groups > Keywords > Columns > Modify Columns > Add "Quality Score," "Landing Page Exp.," "Ad Relevance," "Exp. CTR."

Any score below 6 needs investigation. Check which component is "Below Average" and fix it.
