    # Google Analytics 4 Complete Guide for Business Owners in 2026

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023. If you're still confused by it, you're not alone — GA4 has a fundamentally different data model that requires a different way of thinking about your analytics.

Event-based vs. session-based: Universal Analytics grouped user activity into "sessions." GA4 tracks individual "events" — every action (page view, button click, video play, form submission) is a discrete event with parameters.

This means more granular data, but also a new learning curve. Instead of "sessions," you think in terms of "events" and "conversions."

Privacy-first: GA4 uses modeling to fill in data gaps from users who block cookies or analytics. This means less raw data but a more complete picture than UA provided in a cookie-blocked world.

Cross-device tracking: GA4 attempts to unify data from the same user across devices. Better understanding of the full customer journey.

Machine learning integration: GA4's Insights surface anomalies and opportunities automatically. Predictive audiences (users likely to purchase in next 7 days) enable advanced targeting in Google Ads.

    Setting Up GA4 Correctly

    Essential Configuration

    1. Install the GA4 tag

Use Google Tag Manager (strongly recommended over hardcoded tags) for flexibility and additional tracking capabilities:

  1. Create a GTM account → Add GTM snippet to your website
  2. In GTM: Create GA4 Configuration tag with your Measurement ID
  3. Publish and verify in GA4 real-time report
  4. 2. Set up conversion events

In GA4, "conversions" are key events — actions you declare as valuable business outcomes:

  5. Navigate to Configure → Events
  6. Find your contact form submission event (or create one via GTM)
  7. Toggle "Mark as conversion"
  8. Essential conversions to configure:

  9. form_submit (contact form)
  10. generate_lead (quote request)
  11. purchase (e-commerce)
  12. phone_call (if using call tracking)
  13. book_appointment (booking systems)
  14. 3. Link to Google Search Console

GA4 + Search Console integration shows organic keywords alongside on-site behavior. Essential for SEO.

Admin → Property → Search Console Links → Add

    4. Link to Google Ads

For any paid search activity, link GA4 to Google Ads to import conversions and enable audience segments.

    Enhanced Measurement

GA4 automatically tracks several events via Enhanced Measurement (enable in Admin → Data Streams):

  15. Page views ✓
  16. Scrolls (90% scroll depth)
  17. Outbound link clicks
  18. Site search
  19. Video engagement (YouTube embeds)
  20. File downloads
  21. These fire without additional configuration — a significant improvement over Universal Analytics.

    Navigating GA4 Reports

Reports snapshot: GA4 home with key metrics and automated Insights. Check this first.

Realtime: Users active in the last 30 minutes. Useful for verifying tracking and checking live campaigns.

Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition: Where are users coming from? Sessions by channel: Organic Search, Direct, Paid Search, Organic Social, Referral, Email.

Engagement → Pages and Screens: Which pages get most views, average engagement time. Note: GA4 "engagement time" replaces Universal Analytics "time on page" — it's more accurate (only counts when tab is in focus).

Monetization → E-commerce Purchases: For Shopify users with GA4 connected: revenue, items, purchase funnels.

Conversions: How many conversion events completed, by channel.

    Custom Reports (Explorations)

GA4's standard reports are often insufficient for business intelligence. Explorations (the compass icon) builds custom analyses:

Free-form exploration: Drag dimensions and metrics into a cross-tab. Example: session source/medium × conversion events → see which channels drive which conversions.

Funnel exploration: Visualize where users drop off in a defined sequence. Example: Homepage → Services page → Contact page → Form submitted.

Cohort exploration: Group users by acquisition date and track behavior over time. Shows retention patterns and LTV trends.

    Common GA4 Mistakes

Not setting up conversions: Many GA4 installs have no conversion events configured. Without them, you can't measure ROI.

Conflating sessions with users: These are different metrics with different meanings. Users are people; sessions are visits (one person can have many sessions).

Ignoring Explorations: The standard reports answer "what happened." Explorations answer "why and so what?"

No Search Console link: You're missing keyword data essential for SEO decisions.
