    # E-commerce Analytics: The 15 Metrics That Actually Matter in 2026

Most e-commerce dashboards track 50+ metrics. Tracking everything means understanding nothing. These 15 metrics give you complete clarity on your store's health.

    1. Total Revenue

The starting point. Track daily, weekly, and monthly. More important: track it against the same period last year, not just last week.

    2. Revenue by Channel

Break down revenue by traffic source: organic search, paid search, social, email, direct, referral. This tells you where your growth is actually coming from. Most store owners are surprised to discover that their most profitable channel is not their most trafficked.

    3. Average Order Value (AOV)

Total revenue / number of orders. Industry average: $80-100 for general e-commerce, $150-200 for fashion, $200-400 for electronics.

Increase AOV with: free shipping thresholds, bundles, upsells, quantity discounts.

    4. Gross Profit Margin

(Revenue - Cost of Goods Sold) / Revenue. For a healthy e-commerce business: 40-60% gross margin. Below 30% means you're fighting a margin war you'll lose.

    Conversion Metrics

    5. Overall Conversion Rate

Orders / Unique Visitors. Industry benchmark: 1-3% for general e-commerce, 3-5% for niche stores with targeted traffic.

Below 1%? Your store has a trust, UX, or product-market fit problem.

    6. Add-to-Cart Rate

Sessions with add to cart / Total sessions. Benchmark: 8-12%. Lower means your product pages aren't compelling or your price-to-value ratio is unclear.

    7. Cart Abandonment Rate

1 - (Completed Purchases / Shopping Carts Created). Benchmark: 65-75%. If you're above 80%, your checkout has friction.

    8. Checkout Abandonment Rate

Separate from cart abandonment — this measures people who started checkout but didn't complete. Benchmark: 20-40%. High checkout abandonment usually means: unexpected shipping costs, required account creation, or payment method unavailability.

    Customer Metrics

    9. Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)

Total marketing spend / New customers acquired. Compare CAC by channel to find your most efficient acquisition source.

    10. Customer Lifetime Value (LTV)

Average order value × purchase frequency × customer lifespan. LTV > 3× CAC is the basic benchmark for a sustainable business.

    11. Repeat Purchase Rate

% of customers who buy more than once. Benchmark: 25-40% after 12 months for consumables, 10-20% for hard goods. Below 20% for consumables means your product or post-purchase experience needs work.

    12. Net Promoter Score (NPS)

    "How likely are you to recommend us?" Scale 1-10. NPS = % Promoters (9-10) - % Detractors (0-6). Benchmark: 30-50 for e-commerce.

    Traffic Metrics

    13. Traffic by Device

Mobile vs. desktop split. Most stores see 60-70% mobile traffic but only 30-40% mobile revenue. Mobile conversion typically underperforms desktop by 2-3×. Fix: simplify mobile checkout (Apple Pay, Google Pay), optimize images, reduce form fields.

    14. Organic Traffic Share

% of sessions from organic search. Growing organic share = compounding asset. Shrinking organic share with flat total traffic = paid ads masking organic decline.

    15. Email List Growth Rate

New subscribers / Existing list size per month. Target: 5-10% monthly growth. Your email list is the only traffic channel you own — growing it is a strategic priority.

    Building Your Dashboard

Don't try to track all 15 simultaneously. Start with a weekly review of 5 core metrics:

  1. Revenue vs. last week / last year
  2. Conversion rate
  3. AOV
  4. CAC by channel
  5. Email list size
  6. Add more metrics as your store matures and you have the bandwidth to act on the insights.
