    # Google Search Console: The Beginner's Guide to Understanding Your SEO Data

Google Search Console (GSC) is the most valuable free SEO tool available. It shows you exactly what Google sees when it looks at your site — and what your potential customers are searching for. Yet most small businesses barely look at it.

If you haven't verified your site yet:

  1. Go to search.google.com/search-console
  2. Add a property (enter your domain)
  3. Verify ownership via Google Analytics (easiest if GA is already set up) or HTML tag
  4. Wait 24-48 hours for data to populate
  5. Verification takes 5 minutes. Do it now if you haven't.

    The 6 Most Valuable Features

    1. Performance Report — Your Keyword Goldmine

    Where: Performance > Search results

This shows every keyword that brought impressions or clicks to your site in the last 3 months (and up to 16 months when you filter by date).

    What to look at:

Impressions: How many times your pages appeared in search results for each keyword. High impressions, low clicks = your content is ranking but not compelling people to click.

Click-through rate (CTR): Click / impressions. If a keyword has 1,000 impressions and 10 clicks, your CTR is 1%. Average CTR for position 1 is 28%; position 5 is 7%; position 10 is 2%.

Average position: Your average ranking for that keyword. Position 1-3 = good. Position 4-10 = opportunity (optimize to move up). Position 11-20 = close — more content could push you to page 1.

Immediate action: Filter by queries, click "Position" to sort by highest positions. Find pages ranking 4-15. These are your best opportunities — small improvements could triple their traffic.

    2. Pages Report — Your Best and Worst Pages

Where: Performance > Search results > Pages tab

Shows which pages drive the most clicks and impressions. Sort by impressions to find your most visible pages. Sort by CTR to find pages that show up but don't get clicked.

Low CTR page: The title or meta description needs improvement. Rewrite them more compellingly.

    3. Index Coverage — What Google Can (and Can't) See

    Where: Indexing > Pages

Shows how many of your pages Google has indexed and why others weren't.

Errors (red): Pages Google tried to crawl but couldn't. Fix immediately.

Excluded (gray): Pages intentionally excluded (noindex, redirects) or Google chose not to index.

If you have pages you want indexed showing as "Excluded," investigate why. Common causes: thin content, canonical issues, or blocked by robots.txt.

    4. Core Web Vitals — Your Speed Report Card

Where: Experience > Core Web Vitals

Shows LCP, INP, and CLS scores across your site. Green = good, yellow = needs improvement, red = poor.

Pages with "Poor" scores should be investigated and fixed. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking factor since 2021.

    5. Sitemaps — Submit and Monitor

    Where: Indexing > Sitemaps

Submit your sitemap URL here (usually yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml). GSC shows whether your sitemap was processed and how many URLs it contains vs. how many are indexed.

If submitted URLs >> indexed URLs, you have a content quality or crawlability issue.

    6. Enhancements — Schema and Rich Results

    Where: Enhancements section**

Shows whether your structured data (schema markup) is valid and eligible for rich results (star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, how-to carousels). Fix any errors here to maintain or gain rich result features.

    Weekly GSC Routine (20 minutes)

Monday: Check Performance for any significant drops in impressions or clicks from last week.

Wednesday: Review Coverage for new errors.

Friday: Look at Core Web Vitals for any new poor pages.

    Monthly GSC Routine (1 hour)

  6. Find all keywords ranking in positions 4-15. Add them to your content optimization list.
  7. Compare impressions and clicks to the same period last month (and last year).
  8. Check for manual actions (rare, but critical if present).
  9. Review any new enhancements (schema types, product structured data).
  10. The Most Common GSC Mistakes

Not submitting a sitemap: Google finds pages eventually, but a sitemap speeds up indexing significantly.

Ignoring the "Excluded" section: Many pages businesses want indexed are quietly excluded by Google. Regular review catches this.

Only looking at clicks: Impressions data reveals keyword opportunities that click data misses. A page with 10,000 impressions and 50 clicks is crying for a better title tag.
