Keyword research is the process of discovering the exact words and phrases your potential customers type into Google when they're looking for information, products, or services like yours.
The goal: find keywords that are (1) relevant to your business, (2) searched by real people, (3) possible to rank for given your current authority.
Understanding Search Volume and Difficulty
Search volume: How many times per month a keyword is searched. A keyword with 10,000 monthly searches gets 10× more traffic than one with 1,000 — but is usually much harder to rank for.
Keyword difficulty (KD): How hard it is to rank in the top 10 results. Measured 0-100 by tools like Ahrefs and Semrush. New websites should target KD 0-20. Established sites can compete for KD 20-50.
The sweet spot: High enough search volume to be worth ranking for, low enough difficulty that you can actually rank.
Free Tools to Start With
Google Search Console: Already tracking your existing rankings. Shows what keywords bring traffic to your site.
Google Keyword Planner: Free with a Google Ads account. Shows monthly search volumes and competition (low/medium/high).
Ubersuggest (free tier): Neil Patel's tool. Gives volume estimates and difficulty scores. 3 free searches per day without an account.
AnswerThePublic: Free (limited). Shows questions people ask around any topic. Excellent for content ideas.
Google's own suggestions: Start typing a query and look at autocomplete suggestions. Scroll to the bottom of results for "Related searches." These are real queries from real users.
The Keyword Research Process
Step 1: Seed Keywords
Start with the obvious terms your business relates to. If you're a Denver plumber:
These seed keywords become the root of your research.
Step 2: Expand with Modifiers
Add modifiers to your seed keywords:
Step 3: Categorize by Intent
Search intent determines what content to create:
Step 4: Prioritize
Score each keyword on three dimensions:
Target keywords scoring 12+ out of 15. Start with feasibility 4-5 (easier wins) while you build authority.
Understanding Long-Tail Keywords
Short-tail: "running shoes" — 1 million searches/month, extremely competitive
Long-tail: "best trail running shoes for wide feet under $100" — 500 searches/month, low competition
Long-tail keywords are where new websites should focus. They're specific (meaning high purchase intent), less competitive, and easier to create excellent content for.
A single long-tail keyword might bring 300 monthly visitors. But 50 long-tail keywords bring 15,000 monthly visitors — without competing against Nike and Adidas.
