    # Website Copywriting Guide: How to Write Copy That Converts Visitors in 2026

Most business websites sound like they were written by a committee trying to offend nobody. The result: copy that doesn't connect, doesn't convince, and doesn't convert. Great website copy speaks directly to your ideal customer, addresses their specific problem, and makes the next action obvious.

The Core Principle: Write for One Person

    Book a call

Visualize your ideal customer. Not "small business owners aged 25-55" — that's a demographic. Your ideal customer is "Sarah, 38, who runs a 12-person accounting firm, is frustrated that her website doesn't generate leads, suspects her competitors have better marketing, and wants a professional who will handle it so she can focus on her clients."

When you write for Sarah specifically, you write copy that resonates with hundreds of Sarahs.

    The Copy Hierarchy

Every website page needs copy at three levels:

Level 1 — Headline: One sentence that captures attention and communicates the core value proposition. Written for scanners.

Level 2 — Supporting copy: 2-4 sentences that expand the headline's promise with specifics. Written for interested readers.

Level 3 — Body copy: Detailed explanation, proof, and persuasion. Written for nearly-convinced buyers who need more information.

Most visitors only read Level 1. Your most valuable copy must be there.

    The Homepage Copy Formula

Hero headline: Answer "what do you do and for whom?" in 8 words or less.

  1. Bad: "Empowering businesses to achieve their digital transformation goals"
  2. Good: "Websites that generate leads for service businesses"
  3. Subheadline: Add specificity and time/result: "We build and launch your professional website in 3 weeks — with SEO built in from day one."

Value proposition bullets (3-5 points): Each should be a specific benefit, not a feature. "You own everything" beats "full code ownership." "Ranked #1 on Google in 4 months" beats "SEO-optimized."

Social proof section: Let customers do the talking. Direct quotes with outcomes are most powerful: "I was getting 2-3 website leads per month before. Now I get 15-20." — [Name, Company]

CTA: Be specific about what happens next: "Get your free website audit" (not "Contact us"). "Book your 30-minute strategy call" (not "Learn more").

    The Services/About Page Formula

Services pages are where most businesses lose potential clients by listing features instead of painting a picture of the transformation.

Problem first: "Running a professional service without a website that works is like handing out a business card that says nothing about why you're different."

Promise: "In 3 weeks, you'll have a website that positions you as the expert in your market, ranks for the searches your clients make, and converts visitors into inquiries."

Process: "Here's how it works: [Step 1], [Step 2], [Step 3]." Simple and concrete.

Results: Case studies with specific numbers (not "we increased their traffic" — "we grew their organic leads from 4 to 31 per month in 5 months").

    The Pricing Page Formula

Pricing pages have one job: justify the price with enough value that the visitor clicks "Get started." Structure:

  4. Reinforce the value one more time ("Everything you need to be found and hired online")
  5. Present plans clearly (3 options work best — anchoring makes the middle seem reasonable)
  6. Feature what's included, translated to benefits
  7. Add a FAQ section that handles price objections directly
  8. Final CTA with a risk-reversal ("Free consultation — no obligation")
  9. Common Copywriting Mistakes

"We" focus: Count how many times your homepage says "we" vs "you." Most business websites say "we" 15× and "you" 3×. Flip it.

Jargon: "Full-stack digital solutions with omnichannel integration" means nothing to a plumbing company owner. "A website, Google ranking, and Facebook ads strategy that works together" means everything.

No specificity: "Great results for our clients" is forgotten. "42% reduction in cost per lead for UCPE.fr" is remembered and believed.

Passive voice: "Your website will be delivered by our team" → "We deliver your website in 3 weeks." Active, direct, confident.

Long sentences: Web readers scan. Keep sentences under 20 words. Vary sentence length. Short sentences punch. Longer sentences provide context and nuance when needed.

    Editing Your Copy

Write first, edit second. Get the ideas out, then:

  10. Read aloud: anything you stumble on, rewrite
  11. Cut every word that doesn't add meaning
  12. Replace jargon with plain language
  13. Add specificity wherever you see vague claims
  14. Check every headline for the "so what?" test: does reading it make you want to read more?
