# How to Rank on Google Maps: The Complete Local SEO Guide
The Google Map Pack (the 3 local business listings that appear at the top of local search results) generates 44% of all clicks for local queries. If your business isn't in it, you're invisible to nearly half of local searchers.

Google uses three primary factors for Map Pack rankings:
1. Relevance: Does your business match what the searcher is looking for? This is controlled by your Business Profile category selection, business description, services listed, and keywords in reviews.
2. Distance: How close is your business to the searcher (or the location they specified)?
3. Prominence: How well-known is your business online? Determined by: review count and quality, backlinks to your website, citation count and consistency, and overall web presence.
Distance is the one factor you can't change. Relevance and prominence are your levers.
Google Business Profile Optimization
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the foundation of local SEO.
Categories: Your primary category is the most important ranking signal. Choose the most specific category that matches your business. Add secondary categories for additional services you offer.
Business description: 750 characters. Include your primary service keywords and location naturally. Describe what makes you different from competitors.
Services and products: Add every service you offer with descriptions. These appear in search and help Google match you to relevant queries.
Photos: Businesses with 10+ photos receive 35% more website clicks. Add: exterior, interior, team photos, products/services in action, logo. Update monthly.
Posts: GBP Posts appear in your listing. Publish weekly updates (offers, news, events). Posts expire after 7 days, so consistency matters.
Q&A: Proactively add Q&As to your listing. This reduces friction for potential customers and adds keywords to your profile.
Getting and Managing Reviews
Review count and quality are among the top local ranking factors. Strategy:
Ask every customer: After a positive interaction, ask for a Google review. The phrasing matters: "Would you mind leaving a review? It really helps small businesses like ours." Direct them to your review link.
Your review link: Get your short Google review link from GBP Dashboard > Get more reviews. Add it to email signatures, invoices, receipts, and post-purchase emails.
Review response: Respond to every review — positive and negative. Google says responding to reviews "shows that you value your customers." For negative reviews: acknowledge, apologize for the experience, offer resolution, move the conversation offline.
Review velocity: Getting 50 reviews at once looks suspicious. Aim for consistent, steady review acquisition. 5-10 per month beats 50 all at once.
